Being depressed is like being in a dark pit with no way out, along with an intense feeling of hopelessness, but luckily there is a way out of that pit, and since I was rescued from that seemingly hopeless pit, I wanted to share 3 tips to help you overcome depression .
Change the way you think
Something that needs to happen to overcome depression is the renewal of your mind, and this is achieved by meditating on God's promises. Depression makes you feel alone and hopeless, but in reality you are neither of those things. Before Jesus left, he said that he would ask the father to send us the Holy Spirit and that he would be with us forever (John 14:16).
Even though it may not seem like it, God is with you and knows what you are going through, knowing that the God who loves you is with you through everything is very comforting. Another powerful promise of God is that many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord will deliver him out of them all (Psalm 34:19), which means yes, you may be struggling with depression right now, but sooner or later God will deliver you and you will overcome depression.
So this scripture will completely destroy the lie that you will never get rid of depression. There are many other promises to encourage you in your fight against depression. Find them and deal with them.
Get Up and Active
When you are depressed, you feel very exhausted and you don't want to do anything, but you have to get up and be active. Sure, it would be easy to stay in bed all day, but doing so is a sign of defeat. Being alone, feeling sorry for yourself will not help your situation, in fact it will make it worse because you will only be thinking and dwelling in the lies of depression.
Even if you don't feel like it, go be with family or friends, go outside, just get up and do something. Trust me, you'll feel a lot better when you do.
Getting into the Presence of God
Your greatest weapon against depression is the presence of God. Psalm 16:11 says, "You make me know the path of life; in your presence is FULLNESS OF JOY; at your right hand are pleasures forever. Go to your room, lock the door and prepare to overcome depression.
Close your eyes and imagine Jesus standing before you. Imagine his burning eyes fixed on you because he loves you after a past understanding. Think of the sacrifice he made for you personally. Just hold out your hands and imagine Jesus holding them. It's not about telling him how much you love him, it's about dwelling on how much he loves you and getting from God.
His love overcomes depression. Jesus said: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest". I cannot stress enough the importance of getting into God's presence. If you want to overcome depression, God's presence is where you need to be.
